More frustration Against Wigan...

Date: 08 Feb 2010 - Written by: Nathan Johnson
Sunderland haven’t won a league game since the 1-0 win against Arsenal last November, this surely was the game where we could end this run. Although it was a league game against Wigan who are below Sunderland in the league table, there was a lot riding on it.

So we headed on the bus to arrive at the Stadium of Light at around midday, the mood on the coach was positive, the Mackems we’re in buoyant mood and wanted the team to get the confidence back they had back in early autumn, this was a time when Sunderland were in the top 10 of the table.

We went over to Roker and went to a place called The Navy, walking into one of the rooms, it was an endless view of Mackems, it was like they all gathered at that place. Many had worked out where I was from, and the first thing they mentioned was Kevin Phillips. Still a hero of many fans, he scored a brace against Wolves last Sunday for Birmingham City, coming on as a substitute late in the second half.

We made our way to the Stadium of Light, in the Black Cats bar was the legendary Kevin Ball.

He spoke about the youth team and how he prepares them for games and made a comment about a lass who walked in front of him, said she looked like she was doing a catwalk. He’s got a sense of humour, even spoke about John Terry. I wished that Kevin had got his Sunderland shirt back on and ran onto the pitch at that time. His enthusiasm is faultless!

The game was approaching, how ironic seeing the curtains closing in front of us so we couldn’t see the pitch, I hoped that wasn’t an omen for this game.
The first half was soulless, frustrating, patchy. Wigan looked like a team who were in the top four, I couldn’t believe how much space they were getting. Their goal was terrific and the Wigan fans were in party mood, although we could barely hear them from where we were sitting. I personally could not wait until the whistle had blown.

A fan we were speaking to in the first half was late getting back to his seat for the beginning of the second half. He said he was close to leaving, however he decided he loves Sunderland too much to do that. The second half was an improvement, we got our goal from Kenwyne Jones. Speaking to a fan to my right, we joked that we should give up and support Manchester United, have the easy life.

Full time! One point was gained and we headed back to the coach. The fans booed at full time, I felt the second half was better although new signing Benjani was on a little too late to make any sort of contribution.

Jordan Henderson was badly injured and had to be taken off, on behalf of SAFC World we wish him a speedy recovery.
