Sunderland travel to Goodison Park tonight, in an attempt to end their poor run of form of two wins out of 15 matches. The BlackCats have only won one match away from home this season, at the Reebock on the opening day.
Whilst the rumour mill continues to built hopes up, and express potential transfer targets, Steve Bruce’s main intention will be getting a result tonight.
Just when it looked as though the injury list was gradually minimising, defenders Michael Turner and Phil Bardsley picked up injuries earlier in the week and resulting in missing the Everton match. It has also been confirmed that Nyron Nosworthy will not be in contention.
Despite this, John Mensah, recently sent back to Sunderland from the African Nations Cup due to injury, could be in contention, whilst Matthew Kilgallon is guaranteed his debut tonight, after signing last thursday. In addition, George McCartney will return to action, after missing the FA Cup game due to illness.
Another boost for Sunderland is the potential return of Lee Cattermole tonight; therefore, the solid partnership of Cana and Cattermole could be re-united.
Also, Steve Bruce will hope Kenwyne Jones will pick up form, after accusing Liverpool of unsettling the player, and now Liverpool have withdrawn their interest in signing the Trinidad & Tobago international.
The Mackems last won on the blue side of the Mersey on November 30th 1996 when Sunderland won comfortably 3-1, with goals coming from Craig Russell and Michael Bridges got the goals. This is a bit of a ‘bogey’ fixture, with recent defeats entailing 3-0 and 7-1 defeats. This fixture is certainly not the favourite of your every match away supporter.
Hopefully the tides will turn tonight….
